The main objective of this subject is to present the recent techniques of in vitro cultivation of cells, tissues and plant organs and how they are modified and adapted to increase the profitability of the industrial production processes based on them. In addition, it is intended that students know the current market situation of these types of products and their future prospects.
It is also intended that students become familiar with the manipulation of plant tissues in aseptic conditions and carry out some of the basic operations frequently used in facilities dedicated to the commercial exploitation of this type of techniques.
It is recommended that the student has a good knowledge of Plant Physiology.
At the end of the course the student should be able:
1¿ To describe the factors that determine the responses of plant material grown in vitro and how to modify them.
2- To analyze, explain and discuss the features of facilities and processes dedicated to in vitro culture.
3- To propose new processes or improvements to existing ones, in order to optimize and make profitable the production and conservation of plants and / or the production of metabolites by using in vitro-cultured plant material.

Prractice syllabus
Practice 1 (P1). Construction of a bioreactor for the micropropagation of plant material and monitoring of crops (4 h). Practice 2 (P2). Elicitation of cell cultures and analysis of the production of bioactive compounds (4 h). Practice 3 (P3). Establishment of root crops for the production of secondary metabolites (2 h).
